A high school math teacher until 1978, Raymond Pettibon transformed his career and life as he found his true calling as an artist. His first pieces were made for punk albums and self-published zines. Now, decades later, Pettibon’s drawings and other artwork have made their way into some of the top art collections in the world. The artist has long moved on from the punk scene and his art definitely shows it. Ray Pettibon was one of the artists to reinvigorate the medium of raw drawing into something once again considered fine art. His crudely drawn figures and flowing, rushing waves are made up of incredibly gestural lines that completely set the mood of the artwork. Another hallmark of the artist’s work is his usual inclusion of text that serves as pieces of micropoetry, setting the scene under scrutiny. Enjoy the creative work below!
