After graduating with his MFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 2007, Ben Venom’s artwork has become an iconic meeting place between traditional domestic craft and cutting punk imagery. He describes his style as, “…opposing forces colliding at lightening speed.” His symbols derive from the occult, heavy metal, mysticism, vintage tattoos, and motorcycle gangs. The artist uses recycled fabrics, many from band shirts. As one looks closely into Venom’s quilts one can find many recognizable images and names. The artist moved from the stricter fine art and printmaking world into the quilting and wearable art world when he went through somewhat of a personal dilemma after the realization that his prints didn’t serve a purpose beyond making aesthetically pleasing pictures. He acknowledges that this is fine but was motivated by his realization to move into functional art. Check out his beautiful and striking work below!
