One of Finland’s most renowned contemporary artists, Heikki Marila is known for his expressive abstracted paintings that he creates in his studio and hometown of Turku. Marila uses history as a source of constant inspiration, especially for his most recent works. Whether using an old motif, biblical theme, or actual historical photography as his painting’s backdrop, the artist finds ways to accentuate the contrasts between beauty and the grotesque while playing with the topics of spirituality and paradoxical difficulties in communication. Heikki Marila’s most recent two series of large-scale paintings featured below contain depictions of Christ in multiple adaptations of his experience on the cross as well as paintings of the Pieta. The second series contains a special focus on Finland’s own history as they come close to celebrating their first century as an independent country. Look through his work below!
