One of the most prominent printmakers from the rising tide of Indian artists, Anupam Sud has made a name for herself in the intaglio mediums despite taking up different forms of painting as well. Sud is primarily known as a “feminine artist”. This may be due to her regular portrayal of the female figure oftentimes displayed with a shaven head in the company of male figures. However, her work seems to delve more into an exploration of the tensions that exist between the sexes. Many of the artist’s etchings depict either the female in a moment of solitude or a moment of simple interaction between people of both genders. Anupam’s decision to portray her subjects in the nude is a constant reminder to the viewer that the image is directed at the tension between the sexes in each interaction with each other rather than just the interaction itself. The artist uses the beautiful contrasting potential of the intaglio process to create such alluring pieces that oftentimes feature an element of chiaroscuro. See her wonderful artwork below!
