Native to Kavaje, Albania and currently based in New York, painter Lui Shtini’s oeuvre of artworks have developed and transformed marginally over the years. His older work consists of surrealist still life settings but after a break from painting and after focusing on drawing and mark-making for a time Shtini found new inspiration to create his new series of abstract paintings. The artist says, “For me, painting is at the same time the simplest and most complex form of expression.” His works mirror this frame of reference. His current series is based on the portrait, with its uncanny ability to pierce deeper into our psyche than most formats so as to recognize certain commonalities and differences. Because of the surrealist abstraction that Lui Shtini incorporates into his pieces isn’t at first apparent that his paintings are based on portraiture but once said, one’s perception changes and becomes immediately more intrigued by their shape and symbolism.
