Spanish artist Juan Francisco Casas began his career as an art professor at the University of Granada in southern Spain. However, his path in the art world took an apparent turn in 2004 when Cases (at the time 32 years old) submitted his first large, realist work done entirely in blue ballpoint pen to a competition in which it earned second prize overall. After that, Juan Francisco began to experiment with the process in a manner that he describes as being more of a joke than anything else in which he attempted to make the images look as photorealistic as possible while using only simple, household ballpoint pens to carry out the act. This “joke” turned into quite the success story as he began to sell his pieces (mainly of young, nude women) so quickly that he had to make more just to have things on display in his shows!
