Contemporary artist Despina Stokou, a native of Athens, Greece, uses text as a main form of expression in her paintings. What sets her apart from other artists who implement the magic of words in their craft is that she has wandered into a region of language yet to be searched out by the art world. Stokou oftentimes uses words of her choice to communicate specific concepts, ideas, or feelings but sometimes goes about the unique and painstaking process of looking up an object in google images and using the combined html of the images as the text her drawings and paintings are made up of! Her recent work has also included the emoji as a medium with which to communicate. Will we see more explorations of these internet-age languages from artists in the future?
