There is a curious emptiness that emanates from Ballantyne’s artwork. The artist, born in 1972 in Mobile, Alabama, has become a master of subduing the elements of his paintings and drawings in a way that emphasize the subtleties of the way we experience space and our attempts at containment. The spaces Chris Ballantyne portrays are almost always devoid of human life, leaving just the structures made by humankind behind in a strange ambiguous atmosphere. Each piece seems to hold a narrative left open to the viewer to finish or fill in – almost like a coloring book for the creative and curious mind. This series of work holds an almost unexplainable aura that makes itself more and more apparent the longer one delves upon the subject matter and essence of each piece.
