Jeffrey Gibson studied contemporary art at the art institute of Chicago, and then the Royal College in London. After having been out of school for a couple of years he turned to his heritage and started incorporating a Native American aspect to his work to create a novel hybrid and since then has had tremendous museum and critical support in the last three years. His punching bags are especially popular (and run for $233,000 each) and he plans to only make to more to complete his series at a total of 40 punching bags. Gibson’s mashup of “Native” and contemporary art features many brief written statements, some of which on the surface to be minuscule messages to a lover or one long-lost, and some of which appear to be of political value. With all of them, one can find meaning and personal value as the artist explores varying text themes. See his awesome artworks below!
