Kerstin Bratsch claims to be “…drawn to the occult power of the misunderstood.” She was born and raised in Germany and received her MFA in 2007 from Columbia University School of the Arts in New York. Since then she has been showcasing her work in contemporary galleries all over the world. One could reason that her fascination of the misunderstood can be traced back to her view of language itself and the languages of expression. Bratsch says she knows two spoken languages: German, and English (not perfectly). She also declares to know the language of painting, glass, and marking and she now dabbles in the language of craft as well. “Is a brush a tongue? Is a finger a voice?” she questions? Her intricate, unique work provokes a mysterious curiosity that I cannot get over. I’ve officially fallen in love with her work! Be sure to read this beautiful piece of literature in regards to Kerstin’s latest show at Gavin Brown on Art Contemporary Daily. See a sample of her work below!
